Google Sketchup – The New Tool For Architectural 3D modeling by Tom Kelly
Everyone is familiar with Google and the number of different and interesting applications that they make. One such interesting software created by Google is called Google SketchUp. Google SketchUp is a software which allows you to create 3d Models of anything you like. For architects, this is one great tool that they can have in their arsenal.
Google SketchUp has a very easy learning curve. The SketchUp website also provides a number of tutorials and how-tos which can easily help you to learn how to use the software. The software, by itself, is quite intuitive. It also comes pre-loaded with a number of templates which can be used as a base for your architectural modeling projects.
One of the most interesting features of Google SketchUp is the access to the 3D Warehouse. A number of interesting 3D models of buildings, bridges, cars, trees etc are freely available for download via the 3D Warehouse. This makes creating architectural models a snap. You can even submit your own models to the warehouse.
The Pro version of Google SketchUp (which is the paid version) offers a variety of features which can be even more helpful for architects who are involved in 3D modeling. In the Pro version, you will be able to import a variety of file formats like DXF, DWG, 3DS, OBJ, XSI, EPS, PDF and more. You also get an additional software called LayOut which helps you to create dynamically updated presentations and design documents which you can show your clients. You can custom create dynamic components which behave the way you want them to.
Google SketchUp provides architects with a workspace that is perfect for conceptual design. SketchUp also allows you to create interactive models of your designs, helping you to easily visualize your drawing in 3D. These interactive models even allow you to cut live sections of your models – to help the creative process. SketchUp also allows you to apply materials and colors to surfaces. Architects can also build models of existing structures from photographs. You can carry out accurate shadow studies in real time.
Google SketchUp also integrates seamlessly with Google Earth helping you to get aerial imagery and terrains for your site. This way you will be able to create your models using accurate data and integrate the terrain information into your creations.
Using the LayOut features within the Pro version, you can create interactive and interesting presentations for your clients, which will help you show them your idea in the best possible light.
